Medical Conditions: Degenerative Myelopathy |
This is one ot the most common conditions requiring a K9 Cart. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive neurological condition starting with weakness and poor coordination in the hindlimbs and progresses over time to the forelimbs. Primarily, there is a progressive weakness; pain is usually not present.
Older, large breed dogs are most commonly affected. However, some smaller breeds, such as Corgis, also have a high incidence of DM. The progression of weakness, similar to human multiple sclerosis (MS), can occur over months to years and is not predictable. The use of K9 Carts has created a wide opportunity for older dogs with DM to maintain a respectable lifestyle with their owners. Many animals start with a rear limb two-wheeled K9 Cart and add front limb support to create a four-wheeled K9 Cart as the disease progresses. This can extend the pain-free mobility for many years with the ability to take care of daily functions and enjoy walks in the park. |
